Duality
My work tends to progress best in two parallel mediums, the traditional practice of representational Oil Painting runs alongside a more technical affinity for the Digital Art making process. Also the two corresponding practices have evolved to incorporate contrasting imagery which I have felt are relevant to my own views and interpretations of both mediums. While my Painting practice has grown to consist predominantly of portraiture, my Digital work has grown in a different way and consists mainly of surreal or metaphysical imagery.
The reason for the difference in imagery might be explained in how I interpret both mediums, while technical competence has always been important to me in art making, I see that competence as a different thing in Painting than how i see it in Digital Art. So for my Digital Pictures I try to create a sense of believability in the scene, making sure the light sources are correct etc, while in Painting I focus on a replication of the scene as it was documented. So any sense of surrealism is absent and not needed in the paintings, where it provides room for other forms of commentary in the Digital Work.
